BEYOND ECONOMICAL REPAIR (BER)

A decision to classify a system BER must take into account the outlay to repair, but not necessarily upgrade a system, nonetheless considering whether or not it is viable to upgrade.

It may simply not be cost effective, and therefore appropriate, to repair an ageing system given a limited capacity to bring it up-to-date - a conceivable cost of repair, albeit much less than a replacement, may go some way toward purchasing a much more modern and technically equipped computer.

An example of a unit classified as BER might be a PC four, five or more years old, with no licence adhered to the chassis, possibly requiring a new, redundant technology, hard-drive, and/or PSU, software licence and service charge, altogether likely well in excess of £150.00.

BROADBAND

PCWorkspace will gladly install your broadband connection, extend or fit BT specification standard, Cat 5e/6 or shielded data cable, sockets and/or (WiFi) achieving the best possible bandwidth.

If uncertain as to the precise cause of your Broadband or Internet failure, perhaps first check with your Internet Service Provider (ISP) - They may say that your supply is okay - In which case the problem can only then be with, the PC (and/or peripheral device), the internal wiring (bb/telephone cabling), or with the user…

…Cabling and filters can breakdown, and it's also conceivable, unawares to you, that there has always been an issue with the installation, and that it has simply worked to a degree before now. It is also possible that one or a number of factors, e.g. distance from the exchange, aluminium 'underground' cable, internal wiring and/or PC issues have only provided a minimum service and you have perhaps been none the wiser because the supply has been nonetheless much better since dial-up. If your service has been on the cusp, it can take little to impact on the supply to the PC or Laptop…

…PC issues are of course also a probable cause, or a contributary factor to your Internet not working properly or at all, and yes this can happen suddenly. One can lose a connection for any number of reasons, not least because the importance of maintaining and optimising the system to sustain performance is not always appreciated. It is important to develop some understanding and to remember that a PC should be fit for purpose (FFP), and that the computer may well be in need of a service. A PC or broadband problem may in actual fact be a combination of any number of issues - please see: Broadband advice below.

BT, Cable (Virgin) and other provider (E.g. AOL; Orange; Pipex; Plus.Net; Sky; TalkTalk; Tiscali), including Wireless broadband services are currently charged a fixed fee of £30.00 (Internet Security Ready (£25.00 OAP)) subject to precise mandate. Broadband line upgrade/cable works start from…

Broadband advice

A DSL (None cable) supply to your Modem/Modem Router will preferably be from the Master BT Socket… All filtering should be at source, e.g. the frequency splitter (ADSL Filter) plugged into the telephone wall socket(s). Where a dedicated filtered broadband master socket has not been installed (BT ADSL V10 or equivalent (No filter required)), all telephone sockets on the dsl/broadband line accommodating equipment must be filtered, e.g. answer machines; facsimile; Sky; telephones etc. No device should pass through more than one ADSL filter.

Where necessary, ADSL Broadband (Not separate PSTN (STD)) lines providing additional remote services such as Alarm Systems; Calor Gas must also be filtered. Clients should contact their provider of these services for further advice.

Note that DSL (None cable) Broadband requires BT Specification, Broadband High Tension (HT (FAST)) cable or a Broadband Extension (See also: REN). Where broadband is activated and the Modem/Router switched on and in use, internal wiring…

CALL-OUT

Time taken problem solving is not charged - working largely in a mobile capacity, call-out can all the same take up valuable time so, while we operate a no fix, no fee policy and won't charge a call-out for commissioned repairs, we must invoice a minimum half-hour engineers' fee (offset against repair costs) for a site visit.

Where problems require that a base unit or laptop is returned with us, a return to client fee may be included, consequently customers are optionally encouraged to bring and/or collect serviced units to help achieve a more economical repair.

Engineers' Fee / No Fix, No Fee

An engineers' fee is £15.00 (offset against the repair cost). Our optional standard service charge / hourly rate then starts at £30.00ph (Less 20% returning customers, second, third unit (Minimum half-hour)). An on-site repair might include broadband issues, software checks and repair, a quick service, housekeeping, Internet problems, Virus / Trojan removal, hardware issues etc.

What does no-fix, no-fee mean? If we commit to off-site works but then find and report back a system is Beyond Economical Repair (BER), we may operate a no-fix no-fee, or reduced fee (essential repair) policy. If, however, we diagnose a problem and the client then simply opts not to go ahead, we will invoice an engineers' fee (Systems assessed as BER on-site (Engineers' discretion)).

Evening and Weekend

A surcharge of £10.00 may be applicable to an on-site service fee if outside normal working hours. However, where a laptop or system is brought in by arrangement, an 'evening and weekend' supplementary charge will not be applied.

Malicous Software / Viruses

£15.00 The cost of removing an infection is likely from £15.00, for example, £15.00 + (£7.50 ) for Security Updates and Service Packs, totalling £22.50, though this cannot be a fixed fee, and a full service may be advised.

DISPOSAL

In response to the WEEE Directive that came into force in 2007, UK businesses, local authority bodies and educational establishments are obligated to recycle all redundant computer and IT equipment. Consequently, the correct disposal, refurbishment, and recycling of computers and computer equipment has become an all important part of our waste policy.

As a small business PCWorkspace does not have a dedicated waste facility, nor do we produce the volumes of waste necessary to achieve a cost affective private solution. However, we are able to provide an extended service, disposing of BER equipment on behalf of domestic clients in line with local directives. Disposal is charged from £8.75 for the first unit, or £5.25 with works, e.g. data/disaster recovery.

Business clients might like to contact me, Steve White, more directly on Peterborough (01733) 777878 to discuss a waste solution more tailored to conceivable needs, or perhaps instead enquire with Peterborough City Council as follows:

For more local information about collections of household and commercial waste, general recycling and the collection of bulky items, email: wmhd@peterborough.gov.uk, or telephone Peterborough City Council on: 01733 453570.

ECONOMICS

A computer system will perhaps need to be assessed as to whether or not it is economic to repair, moreover findings may not necessarily or simply be a matter of replacing expensive hardware. It is increasingly seldom worthwhile repairing and/or restoring a resource tailored for some operating systems - for example: Windows '98, NT, 2000 and ME.

Any number of reasons for this might include:

•  a service provider may not support the software.
•  an end to system or software support from the manufacturer or software developer.
•  incompatibility with newer third-party software, hardware or peripheral(s).

Why might an Internet Service Provider not continue to support an operating system?

•  a limited service may be detrimental to, or reflect badly on the provider.
•  software updates may not be cost affective given increasingly fewer older platforms.
•  the platform may not support essential security updates and/or critical service packs.

An example might be a Windows ME PC without Ethernet connectivity, running from an old USB (non-mobile) modem, conceivably supporting a maximum bandwidth of 512Mb.

Economics is not merely about the financial outlay however - time constraint is also an important factor, not necessarily any less so where an individual/enterprise is working from home. A user may not notice a gradual increase on the demands of an aging resource and the consequential, compounding problems that this can cause; notwithstanding that the system will also need to meet the increasing demands of third-party software, updates and service packs.

Consequently, one might consider the sustained impact maintaining a PC may have on any given venture as well as ongoing or future needs.

An in-place upgrade (installing a new(er) operating system on an old(er) PC) is not recommended, and is usually where problems begin. If you are thinking about this, perhaps consider professional advice before going ahead.

LAPTOP REPAIR / LAPTOPS

Many repairs to notebooks, e.g. software and installation problems, memory upgrades and hard drive replacement and/or restructuring differ little to a Personal Computer (PC), consequently we are more than able to undertake this kind of work as well as other types of repairs including screen replacement and…

Laptop advice

When selecting a laptop, an informed choice can help find the right model for the right price, but a cheaper unit does not automatically mean an adequate resource.

Until more recently, laptops were largely designed for the mobile client, not essentially for the home or office - consequently mobile chip technology notebooks were developed with lower wattage for extended battery life at the expense of performance.

Mobile chip technology laptops are widely available, but not necessarily fit for purpose, though installed software will perhaps include improved power options with emphasise between battery life and performance.

Equally, less expensive may be the right choice, but cheaper may also mean budget chip technology not ideally suitable for a multi-user or broadband environment. A low performance chip may consequently generate more heat and shorten the maintenance or life span of a unit and therefore may ultimately prove a false economy.

Netbooks were initially XP only simply because their resource didn't support more enhanced software development such as Vista or Windows 7. Perhaps one might also therefore bear in mind that a Netbook or Notebook supporting a newer operating system may appear slow by comparison to XP for example.
